Healing by a shaman, Kashia, California (painting by Ross Lewallen)
The word shaman (pronounced shah-mahn) comes from the Tungus tribe in Siberia.
“A shaman diagnoses and treats illness, divines information, communicates and interacts with the spirit world, and occasionally acts as a psychopomp, that is, a person who helps souls cross over to the other world.” (Sandra Ingerman: “Soul Retrieval”).
Shamanism is an ancient practice of using altered states of consciousness to connect with the spirits of the natural world.
A shaman-healer journeys to sacred places in NOR (non ordinary reality) with the help of the drum, rattle, power animal, guides and returns to OR (ordinary reality) with information, knowledge, wisdom and healing powers for a client, group, community or nation. To the shaman all parts of nature are alive and interconnected. The shaman sees the universe as a network of energy.
“He (the Shaman) is a self-relient explorer of the endless mansions of a magnificent hidden universe.” (Michael Harner)
Shamanism empowers and transforms lives.
I have built a yurt on my 10 acres S.E. of Santa Fe . When not on walk-a-bouts with clients we work in this very special sacred space overlooking the Sangre de Cristo Mountains ....
